Palmdale Man Faces Attempted Murder Charges After Near Drowning Of Stepson

PALMDALE (CBS) — A Palmdale man is facing charges of attempted murder and cruelty for a child after allegedly trying to drown his stepson in a pool, officials said Tuesday.

Jacqorie Stansell was arrested Sunday evening after authorities responded to a call of for a possible drowning victim in the 200 block of East Avenue R.

Detectives say Stansell was trying to teach his 7-year-old stepson how to swim in an apartment complex pool when he became frustrated with the boy.

"As a result, the stepfather allegedly repeatedly held the victim under water for what witnesses described as 15 second intervals," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said.

The boy eventually became lifeless, according to authorities. Stansell then allegedly picked up the boy and threw him out of the pool, later dragging him back to their residence.

The boy was transported to a local hospital, suffering from head injuries. He was last listed in stable condition.

Stansell is being held on $1 million bail at the Palmdale Sheriff's Station.
