Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Car In San Marino

SAN MARINO (CBS) — A pedestrian was fatally struck by a car near San Marino Saturday night, authorities reported.

San Gabriel resident Zhong Yi Cheng, 62, was crossing San Gabriel Boulevard just north of Sheffield Road when he was struck by a driver at about 10 p.m., according to CHP Officer M. Yasutake.

The driver was identified as 35-year-old Michael Munoz, of San Gabriel. He was not cited in the fatal accident, pending the outcome of an investigation.

At first, Munoz did not realize he had struck a person, Yasutake said.

Munoz "exited his vehicle and saw an object in the middle of the roadway and began running towards the dark object and upon arrival determined the dark object to be a human with a severe head injury," Yasutake said.

The CHP officer said Cheng died at the scene.
