Thousands Of Volunteers To Help Their Community On 'Big Sunday Weekend'

Southern California (CBS) — Tens of thousands of people will gather on Big Sunday Weekend, the largest regional community service festival in the nation, to volunteer and help others.

For the 14th consecutive year, Big Sunday will host projects throughout the weekend, which last anywhere from one hour to two full days.

On the weekend of May 4-6, there will be more than 350 Big Sunday projects, at several hundred locations helping more than 500 organizations all across Southern California, San Francisco and Sacramento. This year many of the corporate sponsors and volunteers were particularly interested in helping our nation's veterans. There will be several large projects to help veterans' groups, with one of them specifically for female veterans.

The weekend falls near the 20-year anniversary of the L.A. riots, a traumatic event for the city that actually inspired the Big Sunday organization. Big Sunday organizers said their grassroots organization is proof of how far the city has come in the last two decades in terms of its inter-group relations.
