3 Men Detained For Allegedly Smuggling Drugs Aboard Panga Boat

MARINA DEL REY (CBS) — Three men were in custody Wednesday for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into the United States aboard a panga boat.

Lifeguards spotted the boat 50 feet off the coast of Latigo Beach in Malibu at 10:30 p.m.

The suspects were reportedly tossing items out of the watercraft when it became stuck on a sandbar.

Officials say smugglers are taking boats farther north as they attempt to avoid Coast Guard and Homeland Security officials near the border.

The boat has since been towed to Marina del Rey, where the men are being held.

It's unclear what charges they are facing.
