Officials Fatally Shoot Mountain Lion Roaming In Sunland Neighborhood

SUNLAND (CBS) — A mountain lion was shot and killed when it showed up near homes in Sunland last week.

Last Friday, Marlene Hitt spotted the cat while she was closing her garage and called 911.

The mountain lion then ran around her house and hid in the bushes.

Police arrived and fired five shots to scare the animal until wardens of the Department of Fish and Game arrived. When they did, one of them shot the lion in the head.

Fish and Game officials said shooting an animal is always a last resort. They said in this case the lion could not be tranquilized.
