New Home Sought For Dog That Lost Leg In Train Accident

HIGHGROVE (CBS) — The dog's name is Shadow, but Survivor might have been a good moniker.

Shadow, a three-legged dog that survived being presumably hit by a train, now needs a place to live.

The dog was discovered by a Highgrove Elementary School crossing guard on Jan. 18 next to multiple train tracks near the intersection of Center Street and Transit Avenue in Highgrove, which borders Riverside.

The crossing guard first assumed the dog had been killed. After discovering she was alive, an Animal Services officer was summoned. The officer took the pooch to the county's veterinary clinic for treatment.

An Animal Services veterinarian amputated the injured, front limb and treated the dog for shock and provided her pain medications. The dog has been treated in the clinic ever since, but veterinarians now believe she is ready to be adopted.

Shadow is about 4 years old.

Katherine Buff, a veterinary technician, said potential adopters should not have any other pets, because Shadow sometimes shows signs of aggression toward other dogs.

"She would make a great pet for someone who is looking for a very active, playful dog," Buff said. "She loves children. She loves people. She loves to play."

Those interested in adopting Shadow were asked to send a short note on why their home would be the perfect place. The note should be e-mailed to jcwelsh@rivcocha.org with "SHADOW" in the subject line.
