SANTA MONICA (CBS) — A new program launched by the California Coastal Commission is encouraging people to help clean up beaches and communities.

Earth Day 2012: Clean Up Where You Live, Work & Play is a new initiative that will host cleanups around Southern California this weekend. Eben Schwartz of the California Coastal Commission and Actor/Activist Ian Somerhalder will launch the program at Compton High School Friday, and will work with students to complete a litter cleanup around the campus.

Following the launch in Compton, Somerhalder will join Whole Food employees in a cleanup outside Whole Foods Market in Santa Monica. The cleanup will start at the corner of 23rd and Wilshire at 2p.m.
