Off-Duty Fire Battalion Chief Rescues Elderly Woman From House Fire

LONG BEACH (CBS) — An off-duty fire battalion chief rescued an elderly woman from a burning home in Long Beach Thursday, the Fire Department reported.

The fire ignited in the 800 block of Rancho Drive just before 5:30 p.m.

Battalion Chief Chris Rowe was at home when he noticed smoke pouring from a neighbor's house. He entered a back door and found the kitchen had caught fire. He heard a woman's voice from another place inside the house and found a woman, in her 70s, slumped over a chair. Rowe pulled her to safety and, after checking the house, determined there were no other people in the home.

Firefighters arrived and put out the blaze.

The woman was taken to a hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
