Rescue Efforts Resume To Free Whale Tangled In Nets Near Dana Point

DANA POINT (CBS) — Officials Wednesday resumed their efforts to free a 40-foot gray whale from a fishing net near Dana Point Harbor.

Members of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center worked to track the animal overnight after rescue efforts were temporarily suspended.

Workers plan to cut nets from the adult whale, which is reportedly heading south.

Rescuers Tuesday attached buoys to the animal after it was spotted by a commercial fishing boat.

The incident marks the third such marine rescue conducted by the center in the past month.

Experts say it's difficult to speculate why these incidents are occurring more frequently.
