Detectives Ask Altadena Residents For Help After Burned Body Found

ALTADENA (CBS) — Investigators on Monday sought to determine who may have been behind a body found burning on an Altadena sidewalk that left residents still shaken up by a gruesome discovery.

KNX 1070's Jon Baird reports the body found by pedestrians early on Sunday morning may have been burned beyond recognition.

Detectives suspect the victim may have been killed at another location and then dumped along the 2600 block of North Windsor Avenue in the shocking death that has rattled the neighborhood.

"I was surprised," said one resident. "I was surprised because this is a nice street."

The victim was found lying on his side and his legs appeared to be bound, according to eyewitnesses.

"He was completely in the fetal position when there was somebody on the scene," said passerby David Jimeno. "There was a guy and a girl and they came out with a fire extinguisher, and they tried to put the fire out but he was already gone."

While officials told KCAL9's Cristy Fajardo they believe the victim is a black male, the extent of the burns made it difficult to determine the cause of death without further investigation.

Sheriff's homicide investigators are hoping the public will help in solving the case.

"You would be perhaps surprised by the leads that can occur in any investigation by simply asking a neighbor, 'What did you see?'" said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact Sheriff's homicide at (323) 890-5500.
