Police say the missing swimmer, identified by authorities as David Thompson of Redondo Beach, and a female friend jumped from the Horseshoe Pier and into frigid ocean water shortly after 11 p.m., but only the woman came ashore.

Witnesses say when the man jumped into the 55-degree water, he was seen going under a wave and not coming back up.

The woman was taken to a local hospital where she is listed in stable condition.

(UPDATE: 4 p.m. Sunday) The Coast Guard has suspended the search for the missing man.

"We initiated the rescue in the surfline and brought her ashore and treated her. She's been transported to the hospital. The second victim, a male in his 20s, according to eyewitnesses, they went in together. We have not been able to locate that person," said Redondo Beach Fire Department Division Chief Steve Hyink.

Redondo Beach firefighters are being assisted in their search by Los Angeles County Lifeguards and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew.

It's still unclear why the pair jumped off the pier.
