Checking Alarm At Angels Player Torii Hunter's Home With Guns Drawn Was 'Routine'

NEWPORT BEACH (CBS) — Newport Beach police say responding to false alarms at homes, like what happened at Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter's home Wednesday, is routine.

The Angels player had apparently set off his home's alarm by accident, bringing Newport Beach police officers to investigate at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.

In a series of tweets, Hunter said he saw the officers in the back of his home, so he went outside and "they drew there guns on me," according to his tweet. "They didn't believe I lived here in Newport coast so they walked me upstairs at gunpoint to get my ID."

"When I showed him my ID, he said I'm an angel fan hope u guys have a great season. ARE U KIDDING ME!!!!! Lol," a subsequent tweet said.

Hunter later commended the police officers for protecting his home and clarified his statement about the officers having their guns drawn on him.

"Hey Twitterland! I'm not upset that the cops did their job today. I'm actually glad they were protecting home," Hunter tweeted after about an hour.

"Gunpoint might have been a little extreme. Just guns drawn pointing down," another tweet read.

Newport Beach police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe says that officers respond to 2,900 alarm calls annually.

"We have to treat each call as if it were founded," she said.
