Sports Entertainer Betty Hoops To Hula Hoop Her Way Through Half Marathon

STUDIO CITY (CBS) — Betty Hoops, world record hula hoop athlete, stopped by the KCAL9 studios Wednesday!

Hoops is running the Hollywood Half Marathon this weekend…all while hula hooping, of course. She is the four-time Guinness Book World Record holding hula-hoop athlete (runner and snowboarder), instructor and entertainer.

She is attempting to break the world record of hula hooping while running the race. All money she raises will go to the the Los Angeles Youth Network, a non-profit organization whose mission is to end homelessness one child at a time, by providing shelter, food and counseling for the abused, neglected and abandoned.

The hula-hooping expert set the record for speed and distance in Hoop Running in the Bolder Boulder 10k in 2005. For the past four years, she has broken her times, with her time to beat being 1 hour and 14 minutes. Betty plans to run twice that distance with her team of runners, Team Hoop, who protect her hoop as she runs. Her hoop's speed has been clocked at 2-revs per second. This means that she will have to generate enough core power to achieve 3,510 rotations to keep the hoop spinning for the entire Hollywood half Marathon!
