Man Poses As OC Deputy To Buy Nearly $3K In Fishing Gear From Dana Point Shop

DANA POINT (CBS) — Authorities say a man used a fake name and a fake badge to buy nearly $3,000 in fishing gear from a Dana Point shop.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department says the suspect bought four fishing rods and four reels for $2,917.86 at The Jig Shop, 34186 Pacific Coast Highway in Dana Point Sunday at about noon.

The suspect shopped for two hours before making his purchase with a check and showing identification that turned out to be false, according to a sheriff's news release. He also showed the clerk a star-shaped badge and said he was a deputy sheriff from Mission Viejo.

The issuing bank later contacted the store and advised them of the fraudulent activity.

The suspect was described as a 5-foot-11 white male in his 30s, weighing 210 pounds.
