US Airways Jet Catches Fire At Burbank Airport With 72 Passengers On Board

BURBANK (CBS) — Passengers were safely evacuated from a jet that caught fire Sunday morning at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank.

The US Airways Airbus jet was preparing to depart with 72 passengers on board, said a representative for the airport.

Prior to takeoff, there was in indication of fire in an engine. The emergency call came in just after 7 a.m.

Burbank Fire Chief Frank Walbert said the on-board fire extinguisher system was activated and the fire was put out.

Shortly after 8 a.m. all passengers were reported safely off the aircraft, which was being moved to a vacant area of the airport.

There were no injuries.
