Glendale Residents Angered After City Chops Down Trees

GLENDALE (CBS) — In late February, Glendale residents woke up to the sound of chainsaws while two large trees were being cut down in their neighborhood. Now residents are fighting back and want city officials to stay away from the trees before they proceed to cut down any more.

"They are the reason many residents bought homes along Bruce Avenue," Glendale resident Michael Klein told KCAL9's Rachel Kim.

Glendale city officials say they began cutting down and replacing about 21 camphor trees that were determined to be diseased and dying, but residents' complaints got the city to stop for now.

"We paid out $125,000 to a gentleman because he tripped and fell on the sidewalk because of a tree that had uprooted the sidewalk, not on that particular street,  but not too far from it," city of Glendale spokesperson Tom Lorenz said.

The city hired a third party arborist to check out the trees and residents will get the results at a meeting Thursday night.
