1 Dead, 1 Critical In Fontana Fish Market Shooting

FONTANA (CBS) — One person is dead and another critically wounded after a gunman opened fire at a fish market in Fontana Sunday.

The shooting occurred at the Fontana Seafood Market in the 92oo block of Sierra Avenue, said authorities.

Police and fire responded to the emergency call placed just after 7:05 p.m. Sunday.

The shooting suspect has been detained.

Unconfirmed reports from the scene say the shooting possibly involved a fight among business partners. Investigators are still trying to determine a motive. Tom Yarrington of the Fontana Police says, "It's still an active investigation. We're trying to sort through things."

The name of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Witnesses say a loaded gun was found within the business. They also report seeing a car "riddled" with bullets in the parking lot adjacent to the market.

One witness told KCAL9 that she was next door in the laundromat at the time the first shots went off. Edna Lezama said, "I was right there. I was at the door."

She said the shooter was a co-owner of the establishment and she used to work for him. "He just told me to go away. He didn't hurt me. He didn't try to do anything to me."

Lezama is surprised that her former boss, a man she describes as mild-mannered, would shoot someone. She told KCAL9 that he was calm even after being robbed in the past. "He was my boss for more than eight years. I know him. He never acts like this," Lezama said.
