HEMET (CBS) — A Riverside County high school teacher is facing criminal charges after she allegedly had sex with a male student on campus.
Janel Ramirez, a ninth-grade English teacher at Hemet High School, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, officials with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
Authorities were notified of the relationship by Hemet Unified School District officials Wednesday. They said Ramirez, 31, engaged in a sexual relationship with an unidentified male student on campus during December 2011.
“We are deeply concerned any time an allegation of this nature surfaces because our first and foremost concern is for the safety of our students,” district officials said.
Ramirez was arrested and booked into jail on Thursday. She is currently free on bail.
Personnel action has been taken against Ramirez, the district said.
