Woman Fatally Struck While Walking Alongside Cemetery In Riverside

RIVERSIDE (CBS) — A man driving a pickup truck tried to avoid a head-on collision and swerved into a woman walking along a cemetery, authorities said.

The accident happened about 12:30 p.m. outside Crestlawn Memorial Park, at 11500 Arlington Avenue, according to Riverside police Lt. Eric Charrette.

The woman, reportedly in her 50s, was hit as she walked on the eastbound dirt shoulder of Arlington, Charrette said.

The driver of a Dodge pickup was going in the same direction as the pedestrian when he noticed "an unidentified black truck ... cross the double yellow lines from the opposing westbound lane. As a result, the Dodge left the roadway and struck the female pedestrian."

Riverside fire paramedics performed CPR at the scene and took the victim to Riverside Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The victim's name was withheld pending notification of family members.

Investigators shut down a stretch of Arlington Avenue between Norco and Riverside for several hours while investigators examined the scene.
