Yorkie Looking For New Home After Being Mauled By Coyote

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A little Yorkie is lucky he had people with big hearts in his corner.

Mike Dinow, reporting for CBS2, says after being nearly mauled to death by a coyote near La Canada, the little 2 and 1/2 year old pooch -- named Alvin -- was nursed back to health (for two months) by a vet and caring staff at Glendale's Hillcrest Pet Hospital.

The receptionist, Narenea Baltakin, says, "when he came in he was bleeding through the nose. There were puncture holes all over him. At first we thought he was hit by a car. We thought he was dead."

Alvin's original owners have abandoned the dog -- doubtful about his full recovery and the mounting medical bills. (The staff of the hospital has since paid all the bills from their own pockets.)

It was determined the coyote whipping Alvin around by his teeth probably led to spinal damage that made  it difficult to move his back legs.

In fact, Alvin has been affectionately nicknamed "Tokyo Drift," after the "Fast and Furious" maneuver that allows the back end to glide through a turn. After two months of rehab, Alvin can now move one leg completely well and he has partial use of the other.

So why do people at the hospital believe Alvin lived to see another day? Says Baltakin, "He got a lot of love and he has the heart of a lion."
