13-Year-Old Boy Recovering Following Shooting Outside Church In Bell Gardens

BELL GARDENS (CBS) — A 13-year-old boy was recovering Saturday after being struck in the leg by a ricocheting bullet or a piece of one in Bell Gardens.

As many as six shots were fired outside a church in the 6300 block of Eastern Avenue about 12:02 a.m., authorities said.

Upon arrival, police found a boy suffering from a wound to his lower leg.

County firefighters transported the child to a hospital with a non-life threatening injury.

"Basically it's just a scratch," said Bell Gardens police Sgt. Mike Sarno. "If he was an adult, he wouldn't have been transported."

"We ended up recovering six casings in an alley, which is just west of the church," Sarno added.

No immediate arrests were made.
