Architect Charged In 2011 Death Of Veteran Firefighter

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — An architect who designed and oversaw construction of a Hollywood Hills mansion has been arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the 2011 death of a Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter, authorities said.

Gerhard Albert  Becker, 48, was arrested last weekend by the LAPD Robbery-Homicide division.

Glenn Allen, 61, a 36-year veteran of the LAFD, died after the ceiling of the 12,500-square-foot Hollywood Hills home fell on him in February 2011. Fire officials say a fire in the home burned through plastic sprinkler pipes in the attic and filled the space with water that collapsed the ceiling.

Allen was trapped in the rubble and had to be cut out. He later died in an LA-area hospital.

Becker’s bail was set at $2 million. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Wednesday.

how about the city of los angeles that inspects and signs off permits. shouldnt they be held for manslaughter charges too, for not upholding current building codes. sounds like an inspector was getting some good money to look the other way.

over saw DOES NOT mean he was on site all the time watching what maybe the contractors cut corners on to save money.

I find this to be rediculous… Unfortunate that he died but where do we draw the line. Does that mean if someone dies in a car accident the car designers should be held accountable? We didn’t hold the architects accountable for the fatal flaws of the world trade centers .. What makes this guy so special?

    1. Cookie Monster says:

Don’t be such a maroon. If he skimped on safety by using substandard material, he is liable. If the car accident was a malfunctioning part, you hold the car maker responsible. Think before you talk.
