OC Deputies Union Defends Fatal Shooting Of Unarmed Marine
SANTA ANA (CBS) — An Orange County Sheriff's deputy who shot and killed an unarmed Marine in San Clemente last week was justified in his actions, a deputies' union official said Wednesday.
Tom Dominguez, president of the Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Association, released new details of the union's version of what happened one week ago when an unidentified deputy opened fire on Marine Sgt. Manuel Loggins while his two daughters sat inside his sport utility vehicle.
According to an official statement, Loggins ignored repeated orders from deputies and walked away from his parked GMC Yukon with his daughters still inside the vehicle.
The union said Loggins, 31, was acting irrational and ignored warnings not to start his vehicle after the deputy "heard children's screams coming from the car".
"We felt there was a lot of inaccurate information being presented by the local media," said Dominguez. He did not elaborate on any specific inaccuracies.
The sheriff's department has not yet responded to a CBS2 request for comment on the statement.
