LOS ANGELES (CBS) – It is all coming together for Shaquille O’Neal and his post retirement plans.
In June , the Lakers announced plans to hang O’Neal’s No. 34 at the Staples Center, but weren’t sure when.
Thursday, NBA.com reported the Lakers will honor O’Neal with a ceremony sometime during the ’12-’13 season.
The report also indicated the Lakers would have done it earlier but didn’t want to rush it during a shortened season.
Shaq won three straight NBA titles starting in ’99-’00.
Lakers owner Jerry Buss released a statement last summer on the Big Diesel, “Shaq had a long and amazing career,” Buss’ statement read. “A huge impact both on and off the court. His contributions were significant to the entire NBA, but we specifically appreciate what he did with and what he meant to the Lakers during his eight years with us. We have three championships that we wouldn’t have won without him, and we will forever be grateful for his significant contributions to those teams.”
