Former High School Assistant Basketball Coach Accused Of Unlawful Sexual Intercourse With Teen Student

FOUNTAIN VALLEY (CBS) —  Former Los Amigos High School assistant girls' basketball coach John Tran Nguyen was charged with felony unlawful sexual intercourse with a teenage student at the school, prosecutors said Thursday.

Nguyen, 21, of Fountain Valley was also charged with misdemeanor domestic violence battery, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Nguyen, who was arrested Jan. 20, has since posted bail and is out of custody, according to jail records.

Nguyen was a coach for the team during the 2010-11 season. He met the alleged victim when she was 14 years old. Nguyen is accused of having sex with her in his vehicle in December 2010, according to prosecutors.

Nguyen allegedly slapped the girl during an argument in January in his vehicle while parked outside of a convenience store, according to prosecutors. When the girl returned to campus she told school officials she had been slapped, triggering the investigation, according to prosecutors.

Nguyen, who is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 23, could face up to three years in prison if he is convicted.
