Miramonte Elementary Staffers Train New Administration Wednesday

MIRAMONTE (CBS) — Miramonte Elementary School remains closed Wednesday in the wake of sex crime allegations involving two teachers.

Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent John Deasy announced earlier this week that 88 teachers and 40 staff members will be replaced when classes resume Thursday.

"I think it's difficult for everyone. It's difficult for us because I know several staff members here," a new Miramonte teacher told CBS2's Kirk Hawkins.

The newly appointed staff met teachers and administrators Wednesday to go over lesson plans and classroom assignments before they are transferred to Augustus Hawkins High School.

The 15-acre high school, which is still under construction, is also in South Los Angeles and is expected to open this fall.

Students and parents protested at Miramonte Tuesday as staffers prepared for their transition.

"A lot of them feel like they're innocent. They're being unfairly tarnished," United Teachers Los Angeles Secretary David Lyell told CBS2.

Martin Springer, who pleaded not guilty Tuesday to three felony counts of committing a lewd act on a child, was also fired by the LAUSD school board.

Springer, who's being held on $300,000 bail, has 30 days to file an appeal against the school board's decision.

Investigators say another teacher, 61-year-old Mark Berndt, faces 23 felony counts for allegedly taking disturbing photos and feeding students bodily fluids in cookies and on spoons.
