Ex-'Survivor' Producer Extradited To Mexico For Wife's Murder
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Ex-reality show producer Bruce Beresford-Redman has been extradited to Mexico to stand trial for aggravated homicide in the death of his wife, his attorney Richard G. Hirsch confirmed to CBS News Wednesday.
Beresford-Redman was extradited Wednesday morning from the Downtown Los Angeles Detention Center to the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.
He is accused of killing his wife of 11 years, Monica Beresford-Redman, while on a family vacation at a Cancun resort in 2010. Her naked, beaten body was later found in a sewage cistern at the hotel.
"He has always stated that he is innocent of the charges against him and it is his hope that the court in Cancun will assure that he receives a fair trial in which, he is confident, he will be exonerated," Hirsch said in a statement.
The couple, from Rancho Palos Verdes, went on the trip to try to repair their marriage, which had been damaged by an affair Bruce Beresford-Redman had with a co-worker.
Monica's family issued a statement Wednesday following their son-in-law's extradition.
"He tried to escape justice by fleeing Mexico and returning to the United States. However, through the collaborative efforts of the FBI, the United States Attorney's Office and Mexican Authorities, he was eventually apprehended and charged with Monica's death. After nearly fifteen months in United States custody, Bruce will finally be returned to Mexico to stand trial for Monica's murder. This day marks a major milestone in our journey to ensure justice for Monica," said Burgos family attorney Alison Triessl. "It is our hope that Mexico will pursue his prosecution zealously and that once convicted, Bruce Beresford-Redman will be sentenced to the maximum term allowable by Mexican law."
The couple had two children together. Monica Beresford-Redman owned a popular Brazilian-themed restaurant in Los Angeles.
Beresford-Redman faces 30 years in a Mexican prison if convicted.
