Santa Monica's Famous Anti-War Sculpture Is In Danger Of Collapsing

SANTA MONICA (CBS) — Officials say the Paul Conrad anti-nuclear war statue could be removed from the downtown Civic Center.

The 26-foot statue, which has a mushroom cloud made of chains, is in danger of collapsing.

Experts say it will take $423,000 to repair, which prompted the city's art commission to recommend that it be removed.

However, Conrad's family and supporters could be given six months to raise enough money to have it repaired.

The Santa Monica City Council will vote on what should be done next month.
