2 People Shot In Attempted Carjacking Near Garden Grove

GARDEN GROVE (CBS) — Authorities say two people inside a parked sport utility vehicle were shot and wounded in an attempted carjacking near Garden Grove.

The couple told police that the shooting happened about 11:25 p.m. Thursday, near the intersection of Gilbert Street and Katella Avenue in an unincorporated area bordered by Garden Grove to the south, Stanton to the west and Anaheim to the north and east, Orange County Sheriff's officials said.

The victims, a man and a woman, told reporters at the scene that after they were shot, they drove west and reported the attack at a Chevron gas station in Stanton.

"A 21-year-old male driver was shot in the abdomen and his 28-year-old female passenger was shot in the leg," sheriff's Lt. Lloyd Downing said.

Their wounds were not life threatening, he said.

The victims, whose identities were not released, told deputies that a man tried to carjack their Infiniti QX56 and that they were shot when they resisted, Downing said. They described their attacker as a Latino wearing a white T-shirt, black beanie and dark hoodie.

Detectives have questions about the victims' account of the shooting, which happened in an area where gang activity is prevalent, Downing said.

"We have detectives at the scene trying to determine exactly what happened," Downing said. "But we're not getting the whole story yet."
