SANTA FE SPRINGS (CBS) — A 12-year-old boy was released from a local hospital Thursday morning after he was shot while sleeping in his bed.
Officials say one of several gunshots fired Wednesday night in the 9300 block of Danby Avenue in Santa Fe Springs went through a home and struck the child.
The boy, who was struck in his knee, will have to undergo surgery.
Family members say they were gathered around a table at 11 p.m. when roughly five shots were fired from the street.
Chaos ensued as they ran to check on both the boy and an infant who was also sleeping in that area of the house. The infant was not harmed.
Officials worked overnight to gather evidence, including bullet casings.
Authorities believe the shooting was gang-related, but it was unclear if the house was the intended target.
