Bank Robberies Drop In Southern California

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The FBI says bank robberies have significantly dropped in Southern California, thanks to closer cooperation among law enforcement agencies, better security measures at banks and more media coverage.

During 2011, 287 bank robberies were reported within Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties. Los Angeles County was home to the most at 122 bank robberies, followed by Orange County, where 67 were reported, according to the FBI. More bank robberies happen in California than any other state, and, on average, between 40 and 45 percent of robberies are committed in this seven-county territory.

Bank robberies have steadily declined in Southern California since the numbers peaked in the early 1990s. The region's high was in 1992, when there were more than 2,600 bank robberies in the seven-county area.
