Santa Monica Police Dog Retires After 7 Years Of Service

SANTA MONICA (CBS) — A beloved Santa Monica police dog is hanging up his collar after 7 years on the force.

Starting in February, Anton, a Belgian Malinois who officers credit with multiple felony arrests, will spend his canine golden years with the family of Sgt. Douglas Kohno of the Santa Monica Police Department.

Kohno has forged a tight bond with Anton in his time with the department and, pursuant to SMPD policy, will take over ownership of the canine for the nominal sum of $1

While he admitted Anton may have been able to continue serving in the department, Kohno fondly recalled one situation where the canine unit led a search for a pair of Inglewood teens who were suspected of attempted murder -- one of whom Anton eventually sniffed out hiding behind a fountain.

Kohno told The Santa Monica Patch that he also credits Anton with saving his daughter from falling down a flight of stairs in his home after he mistakenly left a baby gate unsecured.
