LGBT-Themed License Plates Could Hit The Streets Of California

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — LA drivers could soon be showing off their pride on their license plates.

Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) introduced a bill Friday that would create the first lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender specialty license plate for California. If the bill passes into law, California would be the fourth state in the nation to offer such a license plate, after South Carolina, Indiana and Maryland.

California currently has 13 specialty plates available from the DMV. Funds from the sale of the plate will go toward anti-bullying programs at the California Department of Education.

"LGBT youth are at an increased risk for bullying, which can have devastating effects on their health, even leading to suicide," Hayashi said in a statement. "By purchasing this plate, the public can put a stop to bullying and help make a difference for our kids."

AB 1539 is the first bill Hayashi has introduced since she was charged with felony grand theft after being caught on surveillance video shoplifting $2,445 worth of merchandise from a Neiman Marcus store in San Francisco. She pleaded no contest to reduced charges and was sentenced to pay a $180 fine, serve three years of probation and told to stay more than 50 feet away from the store.
