24-Year-Old Man Suspected Of Beating, Holding 47-Year-Old Girlfriend Captive

SAN JACINTO (CBS) — A man suspected of repeatedly beating his girlfriend while allegedly holding her captive was behind bars Friday, sheriff’s officials said.

Sonny Joseph Mazon, 24, was arrested late Wednesday night and booked on suspicion of attempted murder, false imprisonment and spousal abuse.

He’s being held in lieu of $1 million at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning.

According to Riverside County sheriff’s officials, deputies were called to Mazon’s home in the 1500 block of Willowcreek Loop about 8 p.m. Wednesday to investigate reports of spousal abuse.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 47-year-old woman with serious injuries which she alleged her boyfriend had inflicted while holding her in his San Jacinto home, a sheriff’s sergeant said.

The unidentified woman was taken to a hospital for treatment of major injuries.

She is expected to recover, according to authorities.

  • Sonny's Former Platoon Leader

What several news outlets reported about Sonny Mazon is that he beat his girlfriend and was arrested for spousal abuse on January 25th. What they didn’t know is that Sonny was suffering from PTSD caused by the loss of his best friend in Afghanistan. He didn’t get the help that he needed from Veterans Affairs, and as he withdrew from his friends and family, his life fell apart. His relationship with his girlfriend became violent, and after he was arrested he chose to kill himself. On the 29th he hung himself in his cell in Banning, and slipped into a permanent coma. We shouldn’t whitewash Sonny’s mistakes, but this tragedy was avoidable. It’s too late for Sonny, but there are more veterans like him who need our help. Will we give them what they need or let them slip through the cracks too?

thank you sir the family did you know: no next of kin was notified of his hospitalization for over 72 hours….the relationship with the so called girlfriend was an older woman preying on a vetrans benifits. Having lived and failed at her own life she chose to drag her step nephew down…GIRLFRIEND???Really the lies that are told to the public before reserch is done is wrong!

i get it, the guy had issues. War issues, mommy and daddy issues for sure, but ask yourself this WHAT IF THAT WAS YOUR DAUGHTER HE BEAT AND ALMOST KILLED? Would it be all warm and fuzzy inside. Having PTSD didn’t mean it was OK to beat and almost kill a women, I’m guessing it wasn’t the first time he beat her either but before you pass judgement on the situation just remember its not about war or mommy or daddy issues, its about a man that almost killed a woman and then knew what he was up against and he didn’t want to do the time coming to him. Hence; suicide!
