LAUSD Announces Plan To Reduce Local Districts From Eight To Four

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Superintendent John Deasy announced Thursday a plan to reduce eight local school districts down to four in order to save the Los Angeles Unified School District millions of dollars.

Deasy's new plan will go into effect in the 2012-2013 school year. It is expected to save the LASUD $6.4 million annually while providing more concentrated attention to improving student achievement.

Sixty-four administrative employees will be laid off as a result.

"This plan will enable the District to save money in the midst of a devastating budget crisis; but more importantly, it will allow us to target our service to the core of our work-improving instruction," said Jaime Aquino, Deputy Superintendent of Instruction, who led the team that developed the plan.
