Long Beach Police Arrest 2 Linked To 2008 Homeless Camp Slayings

LONG BEACH (CBS) — Two people were in police custody Wednesday in connection with a mass killing at a Long Beach homeless encampment in 2008.

KNX 1070's Claudia Peschiutta reports the arrests are linked to the shooting deaths of five people at a homeless encampment near the San Diego (405) Freeway.

Police received a tip shortly before 8:30 a.m. Nov. 2, 2008, that led them to the gruesome discovery of three men and two women near at the Santa Fe Avenue offramp from the freeway, the Long Beach Police Department reported.

All five victims had been shot.

Long Beach police Chief Jim McDonnell and Mayor Bob Foster planned a Tuesday afternoon news conference to discuss the case.

Police identified the dead as: Hamid Shraifat, 41, of Signal Hill; Vanessa Malaepule, 34, of Carson; and Frederick Doyle Neumeier, 53, Katherine Verdun, 24, and Jose Lorenzo Villicana, 44, all of Long Beach.
