Arraignment Postponed For Iraq War Veteran Suspected In Murders Of 4 Homeless Men
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — The arraignment for an Iraq war veteran suspected in the brutal murders of at least four homeless men in Orange County was postponed Wednesday morning.
Itzcoatl Ocampo's hearing was rescheduled for Feb. 17 after a judge granted the defense's motion for a continuance.
Ocampo, 23, of Yorba Linda, remains jailed without bail.
Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas calls him "a monster" for allegedly stabbing each of the victims at least a dozen times with a seven-inch KA-BAR knife made of heavy metal.
Ocampo faces four counts of murder with the special circumstance of lying in wait, which makes him eligible for the death penalty.
Rackauckas says Ocampo planned each of the attacks and relished the attention the media gave to the case.
Ocampo, who is in isolation on medical hold, was arrested Friday after he allegedly stabbed 64-year-old Vietnam veteran John Berry to death.
Police say an Orange County father witnessed the murder and chased Ocampo – who had blood on his hands and face – to a mobile home park, where they were able to apprehend him.
They also say they have evidence that he planned to kill again.
