2 Arrested In Murder Of Man Who Protected His Grandfather From Armed Robbers

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (CBS) — North Hollywood detectives have arrested two men in the murder of a 24-year-old man who died while trying to save his grandfather’s life.

Danilo Morales was shot and killed Jan. 9 after he tried to rescue his grandfather, who was screaming for help, from three men who tried to rob him in his driveway.

Rene Ramirez, 29, of Mission Hills and Evin Adonis Ortiz, 22, of Valley Glen have been booked on murder charges, according to police. Authorities say a third suspect is still at large.

Morales reportedly chased away the suspects and smashed the back window of the SUV they were driving before he was shot in the head.

The suspects’ vehicle is in custody and is being examined by police.

criminals are too dumb to plan what will happen if a victim resists. they will have to shoot and then be up for murder. that is why some people need to stay behind bars.

review the facts. they TIRED to rob the old man then his grandson came running. they jumped in their SUV to split THEN the grandson threw a brick through their back window. a brick thrown through a window is DEADLY FORCE once they were leaving the grandson no longer had any reason to deal with them. when he threw the brick they then had the right to defend them selfs LEGALLY i do not see a good murder case here

      1. mike says:

so correct dave the only reason they arrested them for murder is because it is what is expected by the public who does not realize that even a robber who was not using deadly force on their victim has the right to defend them selfs against the use of deadly force. think about it folks if the police had come on scene as they tried to flee and shot into their car or in some way threw something into the car that could hit them and kill them or cause them to wreck and die everyone would be screaming police brutality. so why is it ok that the grandson used to much force??

      2. cb says:

go back to law school. even using your twisted logic, these guys were in a moving vehicle, which the man they shot, could in no way keep up with. they were in no danger, for their vehicle could easily escape him. so, they had the option of “flight” to get away. plus, did they have their loaded gun in their possession legally? NO, i seriously doubt that.
plus, the guy they “murdered” was exercising every lawyer’s dream defense, a crime of passion, as he was temporarily insane from the vicious attack on his grandfather.
plus, he had no idea if they were leaving, or rearming, planning to step up their attack….
        go back to law school.

      3. mike says:

mark my words they WILL NOT get convicted of MURDER they likely will get it for the robbery part but any good lawyer can get them off from the murder charge

      4. cb says:

        mike, you might be right.
not because this would be proper, but because our system of justice is severely twisted.

  3. terry says:

    CB
yes the robbers were wrong from the start BUT the grandson did not have a legal right to throw the brick at a moving car. when he did that the robber had every legal right to defend him/them selfs jacked up law i agree but it is the law

  4. cb says:

back to Dave….he threw a brick, which is deadly force…perhaps.
however, by the time he would be able to pick up another brick, these guys should have been long gone, again, as i pointed out..THEY WERE IN A VEHICLE!!!
they could drive away! the threat of the brick evaporated very quickly, so quickly, as to in truth, prove no threat. Their deadly reaction, then to the brick, was more their reaction to an annoyance to them, not at all a threat…they easily could escape…but they chose to stay, shoot, then drive away.
were i a lawyer, i would welcome the chance to legally do battle with you, as opposing attorneys, in a court of law.. it would be interesting. are you a lawyer?

my father was and he had a case much like this. 2 men got into a fight after a party at a local hall. the fight spilled over into the parking lot. they punched it out for a while till the girl friend of one had the smarts to grab her man shove him into a car and TRY to drive away. the other man grabed a crowbar out his trunk and pitched it through the rear window of the car hitting the GIRL in the head and killing her. her boy friend of course stops gets out and shoots the other guy 3 times but he got lucky and lived. they both get arrested my father represented the man that shot the other AND GOT HIM OFF becuase one he BEGAN TO LEAVE the other man had no reason to pitch the crow bar. the jury found my dads client was JUSTIFIED in shooting the other man. my dads client got time served for the initial fight and the crow bar guy got 25-life granted in my story it was a simple fight not an attack on an old man. but the end is the same the grandson had no reason to toss the brick so i simply belive based on my dads case that the shooters will walk for the shooting part of this

      1. cb says:

Dave, I see a huge difference in these two cases. Quite a huge difference.

In this case, the guy who was shot, was also the murderer of the girlfriend.
in the other case, the guy who was shot, was the victim, or relative, of the victim of a vicious assault.

i’m sorry the girlfriend was killed. that truly is sad.

      2. cb says:

Dave, please accept my apology for my go back to law school comment. i meant that in a friendly competition way, but it might not have come out that way…

      3. dave says:

not a prob CB i get a kick out of a good debate lol

  5. cb says:

Terry, I see your point, but I wonder if you are seeing mine…
They were in no danger, they could escape in their vehicle, before he had a chance to pick up another brick.

    1. terry says:

i see your point CB you say the grandson was not a threat to the robbers with the bricks but on the flip side they were not a threat to him and grandpa either so he had no reason for the brick(s). best way i can explain why i feel they will walk is this
IF SOMEONE RAPES YOUR WOMAN AND IS IN THE PROCESS OF LEAVING AND YOU TRY TO SHOT THAT PERSON (WHICH 99% OF MEN WOULD TRY TO DO IF ABLE TO) AND THE RAPIST ALSO HAS A GUN AND TURNS AND SHOOTS YOU. YOU WILL GO DOWN FOR SHOOTING A “FLEEING FELON” SOMETHING EVEN A COP CAN NOT DO. AND THE RAPIST IF YOU DID NOT KILL HIM WILL GO DOWN FOR THE RAPE AND THE RAPE ONLY. BECAUSE SHOOTING BACK AT YOU WAS A JUSTIFIED ACT

  6. cb says:

are we sure they were fleeing? were they, in fact, rearming?
how much time transpired between all events of this case? a lot of unknowns.
a good lawyer would argue that the grandson was in fear that these guys were rearming, and he was trying to scare them away.
    isn’t the law fun?

    1. terry says:

lol yes it can be fun. clearly we do not have ALL THE FACTS but as i understand it they were in the SUV with it either RUNNING or MOVING when the grandson pitched the rock(s) as far as i know they did not shot grandpa just beat the tar out of him. so RE ARMING i am not so sure of my self. but if ALL the bad guys are in the SUV why not grab grandpa and run for it in a direction that the SUV is not headed? i totally understand WHY grandson pitched a rock i likely would my self but what we are LIKELY to do and what we can do LEGALLY are WAY DIFFRENT lol. the law is simple as far as i understand it IF THE BAD GUY IS NOT ACTIVELY BEATING YOUR TAIL OR SHOOTING AT IT YOU CAN NOT REACT WITH DEADLY FORCE OF YOUR OWN. in my view grandson was rightfully ticked at what they did to grandpa and threw the brick and then the bad guys blew him away which means they were likely close enough still for him to let go with another brick because lets be blunt here when was the last time you saw some thug who was also a marksman? they did not shoot him from down the block they were still close range.

    2. sparky says:

Look at it this way. If a cop came upon the scene of a robbery and assault, would he be justified in using his weapon to prevent the perps from escaping? I think he/she would be. The guy who threw the rock committed no crime. The shooter in this story will not be convicted of 1st degree murder, because that involves premeditation. 2nd degree? Maybe. Manslaughter, definitely.

    3. paul says:

CB question do we know who was in this SUV other then the 2 or 3 men that beat the grandpa??
if not and there was someone who was not involved in the beating and THAT person got nailed with the brick and died would that not make this case and daves case exactly alike??
and to answer SPARKY even if the police showed up right has the SUV was leaveing NO they could not fire their weapon into the car they can and likely would DRAW IT to try to get them to stop but if they do not stop they can not fire of them JUST for the assult and deffinatly not for FLEEING now if they tried to run the police over all bets are off and the cops can fire. but this grandson had no LEGAL right to toss bricks
my prediction is that the shooters do not get convicted AT ALL on the shooting and only get convicted on the beating of the old man

      1. cb says:

this has turned into a pretty fascinating discussion.
shows how difficult trying a case can be, so many different angles, so many different possibilities, and interpretations and possible explanations…
sad these things happen in our world….

  7. gmoney says:

The suspects’ vehicle is in custody? Lol they arrested the vehicle? Anyways good thing they caught these losers just wished we were back in the old days they would of already been shot and hunged

  8. fastfreddie says:

I mean really, the punks had already run away so what was the need to chase them, and smash in the window? They we running AWAY for christ sake, he just wanted to be Macho man, dumb mistake. And he paid fot it.

  9. MIKE says:
