Stolen Car With Woman's Mother's Ashes Returned

NORWALK (CBS) —  The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department announced Saturday that a stolen car containing an Oregon woman's mother's ashes has been recovered.

The car and the ashes were both returned, said the Sheriff's department.

Mary Betsy McClellan, 75, died of cancer last August. Her five children struggled to decide what to do with her remains, according to Amy Johnson, who reported the story Friday for KCAL9 and CBS2.

One sister, visiting from Oregon, had the remains in the back seat of her 2005 Ford Taurus when she went to visit another sister at a La Mirada grocery store on Thursday.

The car was stolen about 6 p.m. from a Stater Brothers parking lot.

Two sisters told Johnson losing their mother's ashes was like reliving her death all over again. Said Sandra Harris, "When I realized what happened...oh my gosh, it was like stabbing me in the heart again. Killed my heart. It just killed me."

The Norwalk watch commander tells KCAL9 that the car was found by the victim's sister on Imperial Highway in La Mirada about 11 a.m. Saturday.
