Van Plunges Into Water After Collision On Balboa Island Ferry

NEWPORT BEACH (CBS) — A minivan was pushed into the water at 9 a.m. Friday after a collision on the Balboa Island Ferry.

A family of four from Taiwan made it out of the vehicle safely before it plummeted into the water.

"The vehicle . . . floated above water for approximately five minutes which gave other smaller boats, pangas and rafts the ability to come over and actually get the people out of the van and they never even touched the water," said Batt. Chief Jeff Boyles of the Newport Beach Fire Dept.

A Mercedes SUV was also damaged on the ferry, but no injuries were reported.

It wasn't clear if the incident interrupted ferry service between Balboa Island and Balboa Peninsula.

Divers worked throughout the afternoon to lift the minivan out of the water.
