Eddie Van Halen Donates 75 Electric Guitars To LA Public Schools

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Guitars played by legendary musicians usually end up on display at museums or auctioned off to the highest bidder. Rocker Eddie Van Halen instead decided to donate 75 of his own electric guitars to public schools.

Garfield High School was one of seven Los Angeles public schools on the receiving end of Van Halen’s donation, through the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation.

“I think his motivation was he just realizes how lucky he’s been in his career and that music pretty much saved his life,” Felice Mancini of the foundation said. “He wanted to give something back.”

Garfield High received 15 of the guitars, which are from Van Halen’s personal collection.

“I think its great,” student Michael Flores said of one of the donated guitars. “Compared to what I played in the beginning, this sounds amazing.”

Garfield High School, known for its award-winning marching band, started two beginning guitar classes. While students are able to play the guitars individually, they are unable to play as a group because they lack the cables and amps necessary and those items are not in the school’s budget.

But that hasn’t quelled students’ excitement, Music Director Eloy Adame said.

“It was like an injection of enthusiasm when you let them know where the guitars are coming from and what a legend Eddie Van Halen is,” he said.

That’s nice that he donated his guitars. He has no use for them. Van Halen sucks without David Lee Roth!

    1. JDK says:

Eddie VanHalen MADE the band what it was and is. David Lee Roth was an arrogant prick.
Eddie was unique and a legend in his style like Jimmy Hendrix. NO ARTIST TODAY WILL BE ABLE TO DO WHAT EDDIE DID WITH THOSE GUITARS, NOBODY!!!!

    1. Micheal J. McDermott says:

Well Joe, being only 10 years old, I think it’s safe to say that you’re a little too young for my mother.

  9. Jl Morrissey says:

Lovely gesture Ed! LA school children are the perfect solution to your guitar hoarding! Make it 76 and send me an American made Telecaster to OKC asap… ♥ ya!

  10. Monique says:

This is awesome! Great way to keep music education in the public school system.

  11. xvanfan says:

This is a blatant publicity stunt. It’s not coincidental that he donated the guitars when they released a new single and announced a tour. Van Halen has shown their greed and willingness to take advantage of the fans feelings of nostalgia by pricing tickets at nearly $1000. If they genuinely considered the fans they would price tickets reasonably so that anyone would have the opportunity to see the show, not just the wealthy.

    1. eggtrailer says:

You’re blaming VH for the disgusting ticket brokers jacking the prices? The actual tix start at about $30 and the best seats are about $150, may vary a little by location… That’s not greedy in today’s live music situation, with all the illegal downloading artists have to charge more for tour tix!

    2. Cathedral says:

Anything Van Halen does is going to capture media attention, but let’s give Edward some well-deserved credit for doing something truly worthwhile. Parachuting into a concert stadium or driving a tank over a car is a publicity stunt. Donating 75 quality guitars to promote music education in local public schools is a selfless act of generosity. The next guitar legend might be attending one of those schools right now, and there’s no telling what Edward may have inspired by doing this…undoubtedly, it will change more than a few lives.

  12. douglas says:

Nice gesture, but I’m betting at their value, most of them will be “lost” (ie stolen) within a year. If he really wanted to be selfless, he could have auctioned them for a hell of a lot more money, and bought many more guitars for more schools.

    1. Cathedral says:

I guess some people will never be satisfied. Had he given away even just one of his guitars, it would have been a selfless gesture. 75 guitars is a monumental donation by anyone’s standard. Sure, he can afford it, but nobody forced him to do this. Could he do more? Of course, but that’s no reason to be negative. The fact that he gave his own guitars, rather than some low-quality entry-level guitars, ought to reinforce the point that he wanted the best for the kids who will end up using them. I challenge anyone complaining about this goodwill gesture to list the ways in which they are personally giving their own time, talent, or possessions to the world around them.

  13. jrmantyla says:

Sir Edward Van Hallen, very cool! Ignore the naysayers, nothing is ever good enogh for them.

  14. Holland america panama canal says:

To prevent distress the netherlands the united states collection provides the $10 daily tip to each passenger’s invoice. One third on this amount goes to vacation cabin stewards,…

  15. Clifton says:

Mr. Van Hallen, Thank you for music through the years ! You are Awesome !

  16. Eric Brauch says:

Van Halen over came a drinking problum and cancer. He really dose not need any of your money and is touring for his fans.

  17. sparky says:

Good for Van Halen. Now if we could only get some donations to replace all of the tubas that have been stolen…

  18. chuey says:

I asked you once if you would remember me when you got rich and famous. You laughed and said “sure!”. This was in the parking lot of the Long Beach Arena after a horrible Eric Clapton concert about 197?…..you are still a good guy

  19. DGF says:

Eddie is a living, breathing “rock and roll hall of fame” certified legend!

Super talented and extremely generous, he’s proven himself over the years and the musician’s with him are always undeniably made better by Eddie’s presence. From Michael Jackson, Brian May, Steve Lukather, DLR, Gary Cherone, Sammy Hagar, Thomas Dolby or Rodger Waters….

  20. Alexander Margaris says:

oh i read a lot of ungratefulness in here…he should give his guitars to Greek schools where he is appreciated

  21. tizwicky says:

Seem like a idiotic way to handle a very benevolent and generous gift. Why would anyone let the students play these valuable and rare guitars. Auction off the 75 guitars and then use that money to by 10,000 “off the shelf” guitars available at ANY music store.

  22. Mehilindosono says:

Hope they got amps for the guitars.

Whats good about handing kids guitars of that quality is that they can appreciate the instrument more and also concentrate and take guitar playing a bit more seriously.

“Off the shelf” guitars are okay, but nothing like a real good guitar.

We should be proud of VH, a Los Angeles band that have become legends!

  23. Michael J. McDermott says:

Uh, see ya! – Wow, one mighty gadam strange day.

    1. Michael J. McDermott says:

Addendum: To those concerned (of course who would be?),
Usage of slang phrase “uh, see ya” in my post means, “good bye”, or “see you later”, or simply “later”, or my personal favorite, “see you later, much later.” “It can also mean, “hit the pike”, “hit the street”, “hit the road”, “don’t call us, we’ll call you”, and other similar “subtle hints” that say pretty much the same thing.
It is NOT however intended to mean that one literally sees someone. [GET IT?]

  24. american citizen says:

How long till the guitars are stolen by all of the anchor babies?

  25. ICU2 says:

Next to Ritchie Blackmore, Eddie’s the best guitar player from the 70’s and as a matter of fact, VH’s guitar donation put’s him over the top!!
