Suspicious Device Washes Up On Hermosa Beach Forcing Evacuation

HERMOSA BEACH (CBS) — A portion of Hermosa Beach was evacuated Sunday afternoon after a suspicious device floated ashore.

Just after 2:40 p.m. a citizen noticed something suspicious on the waterline.

Hermosa Beach police and fire responded to the call.

First responders decided the package was of sufficient concern to also call the Los Angeles County Bomb Squad.

Police, fire and lifeguards evacuated a 500-meter stretch of the beach as a precaution, according to Hermosa Beach Police Sgt. Robert Higgins.

The bomb squad detonated the suspicious device and said it had no explosive properties.

According to the Higgins, the item -- believed to be several pieces of metal and a coconut duct taped together -- was probably an errant fishing anchor.
