Comedy Community Rallies For Comic Killed By DUI Motorist

HOLLYWOOD (CBS) — The local comedy community is remembering one of their own – 26-year-old stand-up comedian Angelo Bowers.

Bowers and fellow comedian Josh Adam Meyers had just finished an open-mic set early Wednesday when they were struck by a suspected drunken driving who had just been involved in a hit-and-run crash in Hollywood, according to police.

The accident, which claimed the life of the rising star known for his one-liners, left Meyers injured with several broken bones.

"I don't know how he [Meyers] survived the way he did, but physically he's gonna be great," comedian Jonny Loquasto told CBS2's Melissa McCarty.

Prior to his death, Loquasto says that Bowers was focused on his future after a health scare.

"Because Angelo had battled cancer. They had discovered a tumor underneath his sternum about three months ago and he had just gotten a clean bill of health literally less than a week ago," he explained.

"Angelo was the one comic who was so accepted within every realm of comedy," said Loquasto.

The comedian's friends have planned a fundraiser for Jan. 20, to allow Bowers' mother an opportunity to watch one of his performances for the first time on a big screen.
