6 More Arson Fires Reported In Hollywood, Glendale

HOLLYWOOD (CBS)  — The rash of arson fires continued in Hollywood and Glendale Saturday evening. As of 10 p.m. Saturday, officials reported at least six more fires -- four in Hollywood, West Hollywood and two in Glendale --  and one attempted arson in Hollywood.

One vehicle burned Saturday night in a carport in Hollywood at an apartment complex at 1301 North Mansfield, a city fire official said.

The fire was reported at 5:49 p.m., said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

With 10 firefighters on the scene, the flames were confined to the vehicle in six minutes, Humphrey said.

No injuries were immediately reported.

The cause of the fire -- the most serious of the four other fires --  was under investigation.

Officials at the scene are trying to determine if this fire is related to a string of arson fires set over the past three days.

Edward Lawrence, reporting for CBS2 and KCAL9, said neighbors noticed something suspicious under a car, about a block away from the fire on Mansfield.

That car, at Citrus and Fountain, did not ignite.

At the Mansfield fire, Lawrence reported investigators found a pair of gloves believed to have been used by the arson suspect in that fire. He described investigators as being "very excited" by the find.

Other small fires were reported at Hollywood and Orange, Hawthorne and Formosa and at a third-floor structure at Hollywood and Highland.

As a result of the renewed fire activity, Lawrence reported Hollywood and West Hollywood remained on high alert.

He reported that sirens were going by his location about every 20 minutes.

(UPDATE) At 10 p.m. police reported two more fires in the Glendale/Burbank area and at least one of those fit the M.O. of the other fires, set in a carport.

Saturday evening, a spokesman for Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said the mayor has been briefed about the fires and investigation throughout the day. Said the spokesperson to CBS2 and KCAL9, "He has the utmost confidence that our first responders will apprehend the suspect or suspects involved in these criminal acts."
