LENNOX (CBS) — Eight vehicles were destroyed and six more damaged in a fire Saturday morning in a carport in an unincorporated area of South Los Angeles near Lennox, sheriff’s officials said.

The fire– officially determined to be arson —  was reported at 5:44 a.m. in the 10100 block of Buford Avenue, said Captain Mike Parker of the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau.

A  large carport was also destroyed, Parker said. A nearby apartment building was damaged, bringing the total estimated damage to more than $100,000.

“No evidence was found that links this arson fire to the ongoing carport and vehicle arson fires in the Hollywood, West Hollywood and North Hollywood areas,” Sgt. Joe Acevedo of the Sheriff’s Arson and Explosives Detail said in a statement.

Authorities urged anyone with information regarding this crime to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Arson and Explosives Detail at (323) 881-7500.

Look on the bright side; with so many cars destroyed by the firebug in South Los Angeles, the number of drive-by shooting should start going down.
