Celebratory Shooters Could Face Felony Charges
RIVERSIDE (CBS) — Anyone thinking about shooting off a gun to ring in 2012, may want to think again.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department says they will be enforcing a zero tolerance policy on celebratory gunfire throughout the holiday weekend, and violators could face felony charges.
"It is important for the public to know that stray bullets have been known to penetrate walls, roofs and cars, injuring and killing innocent people," said Cpl. Courtney Donowho.
California Penal Code section 246.3 prescribes a one-year sentence for anyone convicted of recklessly discharging a firearm.
Donowho says deputies will not hesitate to arrest anyone who opens fire for fun.
The Sheriff's Department urges witnesses to gunfire to immediately cal 911.
