13 DUI Convictions Later, Son Of Ex-Rams Coach Likely Headed Back To Prison

SANTA ANA (CBS) — The son of a former Los Angeles pro football coach could be headed back to prison after a long history of convictions for driving under the influence of alcohol.

KNX 1070's Ron Kilgore reports prosecutors called Dennis Malavasi's DUI record one of the worst they had ever seen.

Malavasi, 55, of Huntington Beach, was arrested this week after checking out of a court-ordered treatment program.

Malavasi, who has been convicted 13 times of driving under the influence, had gone almost a decade without any run-ins with the law before he was arrested in 2010 with a bottle of malt liquor behind the wheel, the OC Register reported.

With an arrest record that stretches back to the 1970s, Malavasi, the son of the late LA Rams coach Ray Malavasi, was sentenced to six years in state prison after his last conviction.

The judge agreed to put the sentence on hold if Malavasi successfully completed a one-year substance abuse treatment program.

Huntington Beach police took Malavasi into custody on Tuesday, but declined to release details on where Malavasi was arrested.

Malavasi is being held without bail at the men's central jail in Santa Ana. He is scheduled for arraignment in early January on probation violation charges.
