Woman Attacked, Dozens Brawl Outside House Fire In Upland

UPLAND (CBS) — Firefighters responding to a report of a house fire Tuesday in Upland arrived to find a woman critically injured, dozens of people brawling on the front yard, and a house in flames.

Police say the 60-year-old woman was the victim of an attack at a home near the intersection of Palm Avenue and West Alpine. Her injuries were initially reported as stab wounds.

It was unclear whether 20-30 people involved began brawling before or after the woman was attacked.

No details have been released as to what started the fire.

"When my first unit arrived on scene, they found a subject on the ground, a victim," says Upland Fire Dept. Batt. Chief Joel Cascadden, "and a fully involved structure fire right here on Palm Avenue."

"We came outside and the house was already on fire," says witness Matthew Thompson. "The police were telling us to get out of the house."

Police say the female victim suffered significant wounds. She was transported to the hospital in serious condition.

Police are looking for suspects responsible for the woman's traumatic injuries. They do not have a description of the suspects, and will not release the nature of the woman's injuries.

Two cause of the fire is under investigation.
