SOUTH GATE (CBS) — County fire authorities say an 85-year-old man has been found dead following a blaze inside a home in South Gate.

Firefighters responded to a first-alarm fire at a residence in the 2500 block of Cole Place about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

County fire Inspector Quvondo Johnson said firefighters put out the blaze within 15 minutes of arriving on scene.

The man’s identity has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

A damage estimate was not immediately available at the home authorities described as having “packrat conditions.”

The deceased lived at the location, according to authorities.

I’m going to guess that he was white; there are still some elderly white folks in Southgate and Huntington Park. I remember doing a ridealong w. an ambulance in Inglewood in the early ’90′s and we went to an old white woman’s house; the ambulance drivers told me there were still elderly whites living in Inglewood who had lived there since the ’50′s. Interesting how neighborhoods change and populations shift.
