4 Big Rigs, 4 Tankers Collide On 5 Freeway

NEWHALL PASS (CBS) — Four big rigs and four tanker trucks collided in the truck lane tunnel on the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway at the eastbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway in the truck tunnel.

One big rig is a gas tanker, but there does not appear to be a leak, according to the CHP.

There have been no reports of fire. A HazMat team is on scene as a precaution.

Four patients are being transported. Early reports say none of the injuries is serious or life-threatening.

The collision occurred at 8:28 p.m., says Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department. The Los Angeles County Fire Department is also responding.

Early reports from the scene said as many as 17 big rigs had collided.

Officials now say only 4 of the big rigs are tangled up, the others are able to roll out on their own power.

In addition to the four bigs that sustained heavy damage, four tankers are also unable to be driven, according to officials at the scene.
